You Don't Have to Earn Rest

There is something about summer that invites us to slow down.

The days stretch a little longer.

The sun lingers in the evening sky.

The warmth of July seems to whisper that perhaps, just for a little while, we can loosen our grip.

And yet, for many of us, slowing down doesn't come naturally.

Perhaps you've noticed it?

You finally have a quiet afternoon, and instead of resting, your mind begins making a list.

The laundry.

The emails.

The errands.

The text message you forgot to answer.

Even in moments meant for rest, there is often a quiet voice reminding you of everything that still needs your attention.

Perhaps no one ever told you that you had to earn rest.

Maybe it happened more quietly than that.

Maybe you learned it by watching the people around you push through exhaustion.

Maybe you were praised for being responsible, dependable, the one who never complained.

Maybe you discovered that your needs could wait because someone else's always seemed more urgent.

And little by little, rest became something you believed had to be deserved.

Dear one, if you find it difficult to rest, it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.

It may simply mean you've spent a long time believing that your worth is measured by what you accomplish, how much you give, or how well you hold everything together.

When you've lived this way for years, stillness can feel unfamiliar.

Sometimes it even feels uncomfortable.

Not because you don't need it.

But because stillness has a way of bringing us closer to ourselves.

It allows us to notice what has been quietly waiting beneath the surface.

The emotional exhaustion we've been carrying.

The chronic stress we've learned to call "normal."

The feelings we've gently tucked away because there never seemed to be enough time to tend to them.

There is NO shame in that.

Only an invitation.

An invitation to wonder what it might feel like to meet yourself with the same kindness you so freely offer others.

To remember that rest is not a reward for having done enough.

It is an act of care.

Perhaps this summer isn't asking you to accomplish more.

Perhaps it is inviting you to pause.

To linger over your morning coffee.

To take the slower walk.

To sit outside a little longer as the evening light begins to soften.

To notice the breeze.

To notice your breath.

To allow yourself, even for a few moments, to exist without needing to be productive.

Healing doesn't always happen in the moments when we are striving.

Sometimes it begins in the moments when we finally allow ourselves to stop.

May this season remind you that your value has never depended on how much you carry.

You do not have to earn rest.

It has always belonged to you.

With warmth,

Luz
